Proposed Walton-Verona Intermediate School
The Board approved the initial schematics of the proposed Walton-Verona Intermediate School. This is just one step in the process to make this new school a reality for our children, parents, and community.
Our Local Planning Committee (LPC) which was comprised of teachers, parents, and community members reviewed multiple sources of data including the significant growth our community has experienced over the past 20 years. Our LPC created our District Facilities Plan (DFP) which outlines any construction or renovation projects in our district for the next 5 years. This DFP was approved by our local Board of Education and was also approved by the Kentucky Board of Education. This DFP listed the construction of a new Intermediate School as our number one priority.
This new school is needed due to the growth our community continues to experience. As of today, the enrollment at our elementary is at 686 students with our total district enrollment being 1870. We currently have 1 class that meets in a mobile unit at our elementary, and next year there will need to be 2 classes that meet in mobile units. On our Walton Campus, our 8th grade classes currently meet in the high school wing. When our new Intermediate School opens, it will contain our 4th and 5th grades which will ease the crowding at both our elementary and on our Walton campus. Over time, the Intermediate School can be expanded as needed to accommodate additional growth.
The approval of these schematics is just one step in a long process that will culminate in the opening of WVIS. There are several hurdles that remain. We will bid the project out in August, with our Board of Education potentially awarding the project in September.
Those that have lived in Walton-Verona all their lives can attest that our community has experienced significant growth during the past 20 years. One of the things that makes our school district unique is that we are the geographically largest independent district in Kentucky at 26.5 square miles. So, despite the growth of the past 20 years, we still have lots of room to grow even more. This project is not about the next 2 or 3 years, it is about the next 20 or 30 years. Our children deserve the smaller learning environment that has characterized our district, and WVIS will help us preserve that special aspect of our school district and community.

NWEA Resources for Parents
What is the NWEA Assessment? NWEA’s computerized adaptive tests are called Measure of Academic Progress, or MAP. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level.
For NWEA Parent Resources visit this page.
There is also a warmup or practice test you can take at home or school.
