Academic Team

There are try-outs for Academic Teams. Practices for each team will typically be once per week starting at the beginning of September. The Academic Teams will compete in quick recall matches against schools in the area during the months of October and November. Starting at the end of November, academic competitions will begin. During the sixth grade showcase competition, the sixth grade students will compete in quick recall matches and content area tests. Seventh and eighth grade students will be able to compete in the Governor’s Cup competitions where the students will compete in quick recall matches and content area tests.
Dulcimer Club

The WV Swingin’ Dulcimer Club can include students with previous playing experience on the dulcimer. The club meets on Tuesdays from 3:20 until 4:30 in the WVES music room starting in late August.
FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)

FCA is a new club for the 2017-2018 school year! FCA is a certified ministry that is initiated and led by student-athletes with sponsorship from coaches and support from WVMS staff. FCA focuses on equipping, enabling, empowering and encouraging student-athletes to impact and influence their campus for Christ. FCA meets once per month.
Walton-Verona 4-H HookShots Club

Co-sponsored by WVMS and the Boone County 4-H Youth Development Office, the club offers training on the operations and safe use of firearms, archery and fishing equipment. Opportunities for target shooting and fishing are planned throughout the year. Safety is the top priority. All shooting activities are supervised by certified 4-H shooting sports coaches who are also WV parents. Participants benefit from teamwork, self-discipline, responsibility and personal achievement with the club activities. Students from age 9-19 years old by January 1st or the current year are able to participate. Enrollment in 4-H is required and a current KHSAA sports physical must be on file with WVMS. Currently, dues are $10/year.
Junior Beta Club
Grade 7 and 8

The WVMS chapter of the National Beta Club will meet with the goal of discovering, developing, and performing service activities in order to share our talents with school, the community and the world. Scholastic requirements for membership invitation is a cumulative grade average equivalent to a 3.5 GPA. Memberships may be suspended for lack of participation in club service events or scholastic deficiency. A member must take part in service projects in order to remain in the Junior Beta Club. Service requirements for membership:
take part in 3 school or community club service projects
bring in supplies for 1 service project
participate in 1 individual voluntary act of service to help lighten the load of someone in need
Lego Robotics Club
Grade 5 through 8

Students use Lego Mindstorms robotics materials to build and program a robot capable of performing specified tasks. In addition to robot building and programming, this provides students with great collaboration and troubleshooting skills. The club meets from October to March and students have the opportunity to compete in a regional tournament each spring.
Math Counts
Grade 6 through 8

Math Counts is a club for students from 6th through 8th grade that enjoy math and mathematical logic questioning. The club meets once a week in the fall in order to prepare for the regional competition in the spring. In practices, students will work individually and in pairs to solve challenging math based logic problems and will also be given instruction on math practices that are above what is taught in the traditional classrooms. Depending on the number of interested students, tryouts will be held to determine who will be competing against other schools in the spring, but all students are welcome to join.
Minecraft Club

The Minecraft Club will begin meeting one day a week, after school, beginning after fall break (mid-October). The season runs from October through March. The goals of the club are to work on team building skills within the Minecraft world, and to have fun! Because this is a web-based program, spots are limited. Information about how students can request a spot will be announced in September.
Pizza & Pages Book Club

Strategic Gaming Club
Grade 5, 6 and 7

The Strategic Gaming Club meets every other week during 2nd semester.
Tennis Club
Grade 5 through 8

The Tennis Club meets twice per week from March until May at the Sports Complex in Verona. Along with learning basic tennis fundamentals, students can learn sportsmanship, safety and teamwork in a fun, intramural environment. There is no cost for this club as all equipment is furnished by the school. There are optional summer and winter clinics (nominal cost) with a local teaching tennis professional. Students must have a KHSAA physical on file with the athletic office to participate.
Y-Club

Y-Club will meet weekly from September through December and then twice a month from January through April. During the first semester the club is focused on writing a bill to present at the Kentucky Youth Assembly that we will attend in November. We discuss laws that we feel would help Kentuckians, conduct research on the topic, and prepare the presentation for the mock General Assembly in Louisville/Frankfort. The trip is optional, however all students will help prepare for it. We also discuss and engage in service projects for people that we feel could use our help and support. During the second semester, we only focus on conducting service projects. This club is excellent for students who value citizenship, leadership, and volunteerism.
