Business Dept.:  Kim Benne, Dept. Chair; David Sandlin; and Grant Brannen (Economics).

Business Classes:  Digital Literacy (Benne), Microsoft Office (Benne), Economics (Brannen), Financial Literacy/NKU (Sandlin), Principles of Entrepreneurship (Sandlin), Accounting and Finance Foundations (Sandlin), Introduction to Management (Sandlin), Personal Finance (Sandlin), Marketing Principles (Sandlin), and Business Math (Sandlin).

Business Dept. Mission:  To prepare students for the world of work and business through practical application of material ranging from basic business principles to advanced software applications. By doing this, each business class uses the current state program of studies guidelines, End of Program Assessment (formerly known as Kentucky Occupational Skill Standards) guidelines, and up-to-date technology (Microsoft Office 2016 (MOS) certifications will be available in Microsoft Office class and Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (ASK) - Concepts of Entrepreneurship/Management and Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (ASK) - Fundamental Business Concepts will be available in Business classes).

Business Career Pathways:  The Walton-Verona Business Dept. offers two recommended career pathways that Kentucky Department of Education has to offer in the Business and Marketing Career Clusters.  These include:  the Administrative Support career pathway and the Entrepreneurship/Management career pathway.

Career ReadyTo complete a career major, students must earn four credits within the career major.Three credits must come from recommended courses and include an upper-level course.

  • A student must be a Concentrator in a career major and receive a related industry certification/EPA/KOSSA to be considered Career-Ready.
  • Concentrator--A student who has earned two career and technical education credits in a preparatory program (Administrative Support or Entrepreneurship/Management) as indicated on his/her transcript.
EPA:  End of Program Assessment (EPA) (formerly known as Kentucky Occupational Skill Standards Assessment (KOSSA)) is utilized to ensure and measure vocational/technical skill attainment.  Also, industry will recognize students who receive certification through this system as qualified for entry-level employment opportunities.  When students pass the EPA exam in a particular area, they are awarded a certificate from the state department and they should include it in their career portfolio.  In the Business and Marketing Career Cluster at Walton-Verona, we offer two EPA exams:  the Administrative Support EPA and the Business Management EPA. Students who take 2 business classes in a particular career major qualify to take the EPA exam.

MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist):  Walton-Verona Schools provide MOS certification to students who are taking Microsoft Office.  Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications are globally recognized standards for digital literacy and desktop computing proficiency.  Students who pass each program are awarded a certificate for  to be included in their career portfolio.

ASK (Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) - Concepts of Entrepreneurship/Management and ASK - Fundamental Business Concepts:  Walton-Verona Schools provide ASK certification to students who are taking Entrepreneurship and/or Business Management.  ASK certifications are offered by the Institute for the Assessment of Skills and Knowledge of Business (A*S*K Business Institute). ASK certifications are business-validated standards and performance indicators centered on industry and endorsed by business leaders nationwide to test students' business skills and knowledge. Students who pass may also include this certificate in their career portfolio.

Future Business Leaders of America:  Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is the student organization associated with business. Students in Grades 9-12 are encouraged to join. Competitions and community service projects are just a few of the activities to mention in FBLA. (Advisors-David Sandlin, Rhonda Krummen, and Kim Benne)
